New official name of disease cause by novel coronavirus is "COVID-19".

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has given a new official name for disease cause by novel coronavirus. The disease will be called as 'COVID-19'. 'CO' stands for coronavirus, 'VI' comes from virus and 'D'  represent for disease.

The international classification of diseases(ICD) may or may not approved the name of this disease given by WHO at a later stage. The ICD is managed by the WHO and it provides a final standard name for each human disease according to the standard guidelines. It aims to reduce the negative impact from names of the diseases.

The WHO Director General said on Tuesday that "Under agreed guidelines, we had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease.
