Sikkim is one of the Indian state and it is known as the brother for the north-east states of India. Lachen is a town in the north Sikkim district. It is 129 km far from Gangtok and located at an elevation of 2,750 metres. The names ''Lachen" indicates "big pass". The town is promoted as a tourist destination by the sikkimese government and draw nearly one lakh tourists annually.

Because of the huge leftover of plastic bottles by tourists, plastic bottles has to be banned in Lachen. This initiative is completely driven by Lachengpa community along with the other people residing in the town.

Bottles make from bamboo will be used instead of plastic bottle. This bamboo water bottles is ordered from Assam through the Sikkim rajya sabha M.P Hishey Lachungpa.

Sikkim had started to fight against the use of plastic since from 1998 and had already imposed many restrictions. It is the first state in the India to take measure against the use of plastic. In 2016, it has already banned the used of packaged drinking water in the government offices and also at any events related to government.

The local people of lachen have started imposing fine to check the use of plastic bottles in the area. If the tourists are found, carrying plastic bottle, then the driver accompanying them is supposed to pay Rs500 for the first offence, Rs1,000 for the second, Rs2,000 for the third. The fine will keep on increasing for repeated offenders.
